Who davens at the Kotel – and who comes to protest? When and why?
Great tefila by Women of the Wall Nashot HaKotel this morning! They were the largest group at the women’s section and faced only some whistling and yelling – but no protest turnout by Haredi women.
Posted here on Dec. 1 was a call by Haredi “gaon” R Aharon Feldman calling on yeshiva girls and all women to come to the Kotel to protest Women of the Wall. (see below)
Women For The Wall responded in kind, as usual, setting up an “event” on their facebook page encouraging women to come. Three (3) people responded.
On the Women for the Wall Facebook page (from which I was banned for quoting news articles) they have concocted the claim that they somehow learned that R Rabinowitz, the administrator of the Kotel, asked for no protest this month.
Did he? Where’s the evidence of that? And if he did – they magically called off thousands of women from protesting in a few hours? And they did this – without ever mentioning this on the Women for the Wall Facebook page? Obedience to R. Rabinowitz – or dramatic failure of Haredi protest turnout?
The problem is – R. Rabinowitz directed that there should be no Haredi protest at the Kotel – exactly two months ago, before Rosh Hodesh Heshvan. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/172468#.Uk03j9LbS3s http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/.premium-1.550351
Although R. Rabinowitz then told Haredi protestors to stay away from the Kotel – that time Women for the Wall defiantly said they are going anyway – and they did. (I have my comments in this Facebook exchange available for any who would like to see – Women for the Wall later censored their part of the post on their Facebook page).
This is a major issue because the stated raison d’être of Women for the Wall and other Haredi women – is complete obedience to rabbinic directives. Their stated objection to Women of the Wall and non Haredim, who they often call together “Reform”, as an epithet, is against Jews who don’t follow rabbinic law or directive. But *they* don’t listen to rabbinic directive from the rabbi they regard as the rabbi of the Kotel. And now they’ve lost non-compliance with rabbinic directive – as a basis to object to non-Haredi Jews.
The Haredi steam roller of harassment of Jews who don’t agree with their world view has come to an end – at least today! They ignore rabbinic directive but also give other Jews a place at the Kotel!
